Job Commitment Bonus for Young Australians

Important notice

The Job Commitment Bonus will cease on 31 December 2016. Individuals who qualify to claim the Bonus prior to or as at 31 December 2016 will have 90 days to lodge their claim from the date they became qualified. If there are special circumstances preventing that individual from claiming within the 90 days, they may be granted an extension and have a further 90 days to submit their claim. Those who become qualified after 31 December 2016 will no longer be able to lodge a claim for the Bonus.

The Job Commitment Bonus is intended to encourage long-term unemployed young Australians to find a job and keep it.

The Job Commitment Bonus provides a payment of $2500 to eligible individuals aged 18 to 30 who have been on Newstart Allowance or Youth Allowance (as a job seeker) for 12 months or more, if they find and keep a job and remain completely off welfare for a continuous period of 12 months.

Eligible young people will receive a further payment of $4000 if they remain in a job and off welfare for a continuous 24 month period.

Eligible young people may undertake more than one job either at the same time or one after the other and still qualify for the Job Commitment Bonus however they will not be eligible for more than one Job Commitment Bonus for the same 12 month period.

Claims for the Job Commitment Bonus must be made within 90 days after the end of the 12 and 24 month qualifying periods.

The Department of Human Services will pay the Job Commitment Bonus directly to the individual at the end of the 12 and 24 month qualifying periods upon suitable confirmation that their work has been ongoing and they have not returned to income support.

How to claim the Job Commitment Bonus

Claims for the Job Commitment Bonus can be made to the Department of Human Services online through myGov account. To make a claim for the Job Commitment Bonus, the myGov account will need to be linked to Centrelink services. Access to the link to the Job Commitment Bonus is under the ‘something else’ option on the Make a claim screen.

The link to the online claim will only be available if when an individual satisfies the basic payment eligibility for the Job Commitment Bonus. A key to determining when one qualifies is the last day the individual was entitled to receive a payment of Newstart Allowance or Youth Allowance (as a job seeker) on or after 1 July 2014.

When an individual satisfies the basic payment eligibility, a reminder message will be sent to the myGov account advising that they can now apply for the Job Commitment Bonus.

More information about claiming is available from the Department of Human Services Job Commitment Bonus website and if you have any issues with lodging your online claim, you can contact the Department of Human Services on 132 850.
