Australian Industry and Skills Committee

Australian and Industry Skills Committee

The AISC was established by the COAG Industry and Skills Council in May 2015 to give industry a formal, expanded role in policy direction and decision-making for the vocational education and training sector.

Australia requires a highly-trained and flexible workforce to ensure industries have skills to increase productivity, maximise competiveness, adapt to rapid technological change and foster innovation.

The arrangements for developing training products came into effect on 1 January 2016.  The model gives industry a leading role in the national vocational education and training (VET) system, and strengthens contestability in the system while retaining the collaborative strengths of the previous model.

The model enables industry to prioritise the development and review of training packages based on industry demand for skills, now and into the future, and technological and regulatory changes.

The Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC), consisting of industry leaders from across Australia, was established in May 2015 by the COAG Industry and Skills Council.  The AISC provides leadership and guidance to the VET system, bringing a strong industry-based perspective which will enhance responsiveness, quality and relevance within the sector.

The AISC draws on advice from the new Industry Reference Committees (IRCs) which are made up of people with experience, skills and knowledge of their particular industry sector. Their advice ensures training packages meet the needs of employers and the modern economy. IRCs are supported by the new Skills Service Organisations (SSOs).

SSOs are independent, professional service organisations. Under direction of relevant IRCs, they will undertake work commissioned by the AISC on the review and development of training products.
