These case studies were written by people working in the Workplace English Language and Literacy (WELL) programme and the former Language, Literacy and Numeracy Programme, now known as the Skills for Education and Employment program, both of which are funded by the Australian Government.
These case studies provide useful examples as to how the Australian Core Skills Framework can be used to describe performance in the core skills.
Note: These case studies are based on the original Australian Core Skills Framework and will be reviewed once the revised framework has been used in these programs.
The Australian Core Skills Framework recognises that an individual may be operating across different levels within a core skill, demonstrating some Performance Features across two or more levels, or performing more strongly in one Domain of Communication than another. It is also likely that an individual will not perform at the same framework level across all five core skills. This can be captured in what is called a 'spiky profile' (Bateson 2001).
Using the framework, an individual's performance across the five core skills can be benchmarked and a spiky profile constructed. This provides valuable information about an individual's areas of strength and specifically identifies any areas where further training could be beneficial.
