Disability Action Plan 2018–2020

The aim of the plan is to develop a culture of support and respect in the Department for people with disability and for carers of people with disability – one that reflects a person’s contribution and ability, and allows for reasonable workplace adjustments to be made to maximise their contribution.

The priorities in the Disability Action Plan have been developed to align with the four key action areas in the As One: Making it Happen, APS Disability Employment Strategy 2016–2019.

Disability Action Plan 2018-2020 Priority 1

Priority 1

Expand the range of employment opportunities for people with disability

First 12 months

  1. Enter into a partnership with JobAccess for 12 months to help break down barriers to employment, build confidence and competence for people with disability.
  2. Expand pathways into the APS, including through the use of the disability Affirmative measure and participation in internships such as Stepping Into.

and for the next two years

  1. All chairs of selection panels are required to have completed Disability Confidence and Unconscious Bias training.
  2. Promote government procurement from businesses that employ people with disability.
  3. Investigate a pathway for Stepping Into participants to gain ongoing employment with the Department.

Priority 2

Invest in developing the capability of employees with disability

First 12 months

  1. Partner with the Australian Network on Disability (AND) to pilot an internal mentoring program for employees with disability.
  2. Develop an information pack on workplace adjustments, RecruitAbility and internal supports available to employees with disability for branches and key corporate areas.
  3. Hold a workshop specifically for employees with disability and carers of people with disability, to discuss recruitment, retention and career development.

and for the next two years

  1. Participate in the annual AND Access and Inclusion Index every two years.
  2. Establish an annual Five plus Five Forum with members of the Executive and employees who have disability or is a carer of people with disability.

Priority 3

Increase the representation of employees with disability in senior roles

First 12 months

  1. Promote leadership development programs to employees with disability and carers of employees with disability.
  2. SES leaders share their experiences working with a disability to build confidence in employees with disability to pursue more senior roles.

and for the next two years

  1. Promote SES vacancies to key disability networks in the private sector.
  2. Promote mentoring opportunities between SES employees and employees with disability.

Priority 4

Foster inclusive cultures in the workplace

First 12 months

  1. Implement internal communication activities to raise disability awareness including awareness of invisible disabilities, carers of people with disability and address barriers in the workplace.
  2. Review our procurement policies and practices to ensure accessibility is considered in service, system or property related procurement activities.

and for the next two years

  1. Develop a formal process to ensure all internally developed software and applications are accessible for people with disability.
  2. Refresh the Disability and Carers Network
