Gender Equality Action Plan 2016–2019

The Department’s Gender Equality Action Plan is a response to the Balancing the Future: The Australian Public Service Gender Equality Strategy 2016–2019. Achieving gender equality will allow the Department to realise the benefits of diversity in leadership and decision making, enhance our ability to attract and retain the best people, and establish our credentials as a thought leader on gender and diversity in the workplace.

Priority 1

Increase take up of flexible working arrangements

2016-2018 commitments

  1. Enter into a secondment arrangement with Chief Executive Women (CEW) to identify the interventions and strategies that will have the greatest impact on improving our gender equality in the workplace.

  1. Promote the take up of flexible working arrangements through sharing success stories of men and SES employees who work flexibly in the Department.

Priority 2

Improving return to work experiences

2016-2018 commitments

  1. Develop and promote practical guidance and supporting documentation for employees going on parental leave.
  2. Develop and promote practical guidance to build our managers’ capability in effectively supporting employees before, during and after return from parental leave, and to manage in a flexible working environment.

  1. Investigate coaching and mentoring programs for parents returning from parental leave.

SES employee gap analysis

  1. Undertake an annual SES employee gender pay gap analysis (by classification) to identify any gaps greater than three per cent, and make recommendations to respond to any disparity, as appropriate.

Gender balance in job roles

  1. Develop plans to address gender occupational segregation where it is known to exist.

  1. Offer occupational specific internships such as an Information Communication Technology (ICT) internship for women studying ICT

Gender balance on boards and committees

2016-2018 commitments

  1. Our SES employees will commit to the Panel Pledge to support gender balance at internal and external panels, forums, committees and events. 
  2. Include gender balance in the Terms of Reference for governance committees.

  1. Review and report on the gender balance of governance committees as part of the annual governance committee health check process.
