G20 Employment

For:

The Group of Twenty (G20) is the premier forum for international economic cooperation and decision-making. Employment is a central part of the G20 agenda in 2014, alongside discussions on strengthening the global economy. The Taskforce on Employment and the Labour and Employment Ministers are responsible for progressing employment issues.

The G20 membership comprises 19 countries plus the European Union. Members meet regularly to discuss ways to strengthen the global economy, reform international financial institutions, improve financial regulation, and discuss the key economic reforms that are needed in each of the member countries. Australia officially took over presidency of the G20 from Russia on 1 December 2013.

Underpinning these meetings is a year-long program of meetings between senior officials, and of working groups coordinating policy on specific issues. The G20 Taskforce on Employment is one of the groups contributing to the work of the G20. Participation in the taskforce is open to G20 members and invited guest country government representatives and experts.

Promoting economic growth and employment outcomes are two of the key priorities for Australia’s G20 year, and the taskforce plays an important role in informing this agenda. The work of the taskforce feeds into country employment plans and growth strategies and directly influences the G20 Labour and Employment Ministerial meeting in September. Ministers will use the meeting to finalise their Declaration, including recommendations for the G20 Leaders.

The G20 Taskforce on Employment is meeting four times in 2014 in the lead-up to the Labour and Employment Ministerial meeting.
