The Graduate Program is a ten month program offering workplace learning and development in a supportive environment.

The Graduate Program offers:

  • Placements in a different range of work areas, providing opportunities to work on a variety of programs and policies developed and implemented by the Department.

Training and Development

Throughout the graduate program, graduates will participate in a range of internal and external training and development activities which incorporates face to face, self-paced and virtual leaning. There will also be mandatory and-opt in training so you can customise your learning and development experience.

The training program may include project management, policy formulation and advice, stakeholder engagement, writing for the APS and strategic thinking and innovation. 

The Department of Employment is committed to ongoing learning and development beyond the graduate program. We offer further training and professional development opportunities and access to studies assistance.

Graduate Program Disciplines

The Department of Employment recruits graduates in five disciplines, Generalist, Economics, Legal, Quantitate Analysis and ICT

Generalist

Overview:

The Australian Government Department of Employment is responsible for national policies and programmes that help Australians find and keep employment and work in safe, fair and productive workplaces.

What our graduates do

As a generalist graduate, you will find yourself working in various roles that may include policy development and advice, project and contract management, program implementation, finance and governance, human resources and communications.

Economics

Overview

The Department of Employment and its people are at the forefront of Australian labour market analysis and policy development. By providing economic and labour market advice to portfolio Ministers and the Australian Government, the Department’s work impacts directly on the lives of Australians. Department of Employment economics/econometrics graduates are involved in core work and are given real responsibility from the start.

What our graduates do

  • Economic and labour market research and analysis of emerging labour market trends and developments.
  • Providing briefings to Ministers and Department executive on the state of the labour market at a national, State, industry and regional level.
  • Writing reports, preparing publications and Parliamentary Question Time Briefs for the Employment Minister on the key ABS labour market data releases.
  • Investigating labour market outcomes for disadvantage groups, including youth, the long-term unemployed, the low skilled and mature age persons.
  • Contributing to the Australian Government’s submission to the Annual Wage Review.
  • Undertaking our own surveys of employer recruitment activity and skills shortage research.
  • Monitoring job vacancy rates.
  • Undertaking industry and regional employment projections to inform policy development.
  • Analysing the contributing factors assisting Australians to move from unemployment into jobs.
  • Evaluation of government labour market programmes and policies.

Who we are looking for:

Legal

Overview

The Department of Employment’s 2018 Legal Graduate Programme offers career opportunities for talented and motivated law graduates.

Graduate lawyers are involved in the full range of work undertaken by our legal teams, including in the areas of government and administrative law, corporate and commercial law, intellectual property, legislation development (including drafting of legislative instruments), social security, information law, litigation, workers’ compensation, workplace relations and work health and safety law.

Our lawyers provide legal advice and services (including in relation to the development of legislation and the conduct of litigation) across the range of the Department’s responsibilities. Quantitative Analysis

Overview

The Quantitative Analysis discipline is looking for university graduates with strong analytical, numeric and communication skills to join our team of professional analysts at the Department of Employment. Our Quantitative Analysis graduates apply their specialist skills gained through university to real-world issues and a range of data sources. We offer formal and on-the-job training supported by experienced supervisors to develop your skills in quantitative and data analysis using industry-standard software like SAS and SQL.

What our graduates do

As a graduate in the Quantitative Analysis discipline you will be involved in monitoring, measuring and evaluating the outcomes of the Department’s labour market programs. Your specialist skills will be challenged as you deliver evidence-based advice to inform the Department’s current and future policy agenda. Examples of what our graduates are doing and may specialise in include:

  • Analysing and reporting on the labour market outcomes of disadvantaged groups, including youth, migrants and Indigenous Australians.
  • Measuring the effectiveness of employment programs through survey and administrative data.
  • Evaluating the effectiveness of employment and workplace relations trials through the use of randomised controlled trials.
  • Using sophisticated data matching, predictive modelling and analytics to develop insight into the behaviour and activities of job seekers and employment service providers.
  • Developing and reporting on appropriate measures of performance for publically-funded employment services.
  • Investigating the factors that contribute to long-term unemployment.

What we are looking for:

We are seeking highly motivated graduates with degrees in one of the following disciplines or any other field with a focus on quantitative analysis and problem solving. Information and Communications Technology

Overview

Technology has the potential to further enhance and transform the Department’s business and service delivery to improve productivity, innovation, responsiveness, meet our people’s expectations for better services, and contribute to the creation of more open government. By being closely aligned with the Department’s goals and strategies, the Department’s ICT can deliver the services, technology and solutions to help achieve our vision of ‘more jobs, great workplaces’.

The Department continues to explore and invest in innovative technologies and is recognised as being at the forefront of the deployment of these technologies within the Australian Public Service (APS). The Department is a leader in the deployment of Microsoft technologies such as .Net, SharePoint, Exchange, SQL, Windows and the Office Suite. Our desktop applications and facilities are also considered cutting edge within government.

While the majority of the Department’s ICT workforce is based in Canberra, it also has a development branch located in North Ryde in Sydney. The Department also plays a core part in the delivery of direct ICT services to other APS agencies.
