If you are a small business needing help to navigate complex industrial relations laws, the Fair Work Commission can help.

They can provide free and independent legal advice to eligible small and family business employers and individual employees who need assistance with industrial relations laws and disputes.

Small Business Concierge Service providing support for tax disputes

From 1 March 2019, the Office of the Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO) will assist small businesses in dispute with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) with the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) process.

Through the Small Business Concierge Service, small business owners will be guided through the AAT system, costs and timelines to support a timely resolution. The ASBFEO will also provide access to legal advice for unrepresented small business taxpayers, using a list of lawyers with tax litigation, AAT and small business experience.

Where the ATO engages external legal counsel in the AAT and the small business does not have legal representation, the ATO will cover the cost of providing the small business with equivalent legal representation. If the ATO appeals the AAT decision to the Federal Court it will pay the small business’s reasonable legal costs.
