A new report describing best practice support for retrenched workers was published on the department’s website this week.
The Transition of the Australian Car Manufacturing Sector— Outcomes & Best Practice Summary Report details the outcomes for workers from one of the most significant industry adjustments seen in Australia’s manufacturing sector — the closure of the Ford, Holden and Toyota car manufacturing plants in 2016 and 2017.
The report identifies best practice in supporting retrenched workers to transition to new opportunities. In particular, the three year notification period the car manufacturers provided and the support provided to workers both before and after the transition were identified as being especially successful.
During the transition, car manufacturing workers were given career and training advice, extensive training support, access to health and wellbeing initiatives, and ongoing job search assistance.
Twelve months after exiting the car industry, 82 per cent of workers in the jobs market were working again, with 4 per cent of these starting their own business.
The report is recommended reading for employers and workers facing restructuring or industries facing structural change.
The Department of Employment, Skills, Small and Family Business has a number of initiatives and programs in place to assist retrenched workers and employers.
Since 1 July, retrenched workers and their partners have immediate access to employment services, before becoming eligible for income support.
The Skills Match tool, hosted on Job Outlook, is an online resource that shows workers alternative jobs or careers that use their skills, and the What's Next? website helps workers decide what to do if they have been retrenched or are looking for a new career.
The Stronger Transitions package provides support to retrenched workers in five regions by working in partnership with local employers to deliver transition support.
Employers can contact the department at firstname.lastname@example.org or call the Employment Services Information line on 131 715 to discuss government support available for retrenched workers.
