On Tuesday 24 July 2018, more than 800 locals attended a Jobs Fair at Providore Place in Devonport, Tasmania.
Over 40 eager exhibitors came together to showcase local opportunities, bringing with them a range of jobs, apprenticeships and education options within the region.
More than 110 job opportunities were available on the day with employers collecting over 265 résumés.
Presenting practical and current information on ways to maximise their potential to obtain work and where to look for opportunities, was Ivan Neville from the Department of Jobs and Small Business. A familiar face at jobs fairs and expos, Ivan’s region-specific information was well received, with many attendees taking the opportunity to ask him questions.
A key success of the Devonport Jobs Fair was the Employer Panel Discussion, where four local employers provided their advice on what they look for in a successful candidate. The panel discussed how candidates should structure their résumés and why they use online application processes.
Hearing the information directly from employers resonated with many attendees, who walked away with a greater understanding of how to make a lasting impression on employers.
Summing up the success of the Jobs Fair, Employment Facilitator for North/North West Tasmania James McCormack, said, ‘The Jobs Fair has been a practical way for our community to engage with local employers, who have brought real employment opportunities to the table.
'Those looking for work – or information on where future opportunities may be and training advice – have appreciated the ability to learn more about what is occurring and available in the region.'
The Devonport Jobs Fair is the first of six jobs fairs for 2018 as part of the Stronger Transitions package.
