The Labour Market Information Portal brings together data and insights from a range of official sources to increase your understanding of local labour markets.
What is the Labour Market Information Portal?
The portal was launched in 2005 to help employment service providers better understand their local labour markets, thus enabling them to provide the best service to job seekers.
The scope of information published on the portal has increased significantly since 2005 and it is now home to a vast range of labour market information, catering to a range of users. The portal has established a reputation as a premier source of regional labour market data, and is now much easier to navigate following improvements to the user interface and data-mapping channel.
What can I do on the Labour Market Information Portal?
- Gain insights
- View a range of reports and publications produced by the department. For example, did you know that 78% of employers who knowingly hired an ex-offender reported positive outcomes?
- View popular content such as industry and occupation employment projections, the monthly vacancy report, in-depth industry data, surveys of employer recruitment experiences and reports from state labour economics offices.
- Explore the data
- Explore two geographical classifications using interactive mapping – ABS Statistical Area 4 (SA4) and Employment Regions (the regions jobactive providers are contracted to service).
- Look at jobactive caseloads, Centrelink beneficiary data, employment by industry and occupation data, unemployment rates and population statistics.
- Download data
- Download data in Excel files, including SA4 data, Employment Region data and Disability Employment Services data (provided by the Department of Social Services).
Who uses the Labour Market Information Portal?
As at August 2018, there were more than 2,500 subscribers to the portal mailing list. This is a convenient way to stay up-to-date with the latest data and insights from the department, such as the recently released Online Recruitment report and Insights from the Survey of Employers’ Recruitment Experiences. Findings in these reports include:
- Over the past four years, the proportion of employment vacancies advertised online has increased by 15 percentage points to 60%.
- Social media is a rapidly emerging recruitment platform, accounting for 9% of vacancies in 2016-17 – up from 2% in 2013-14.
- In 2017, 72% of businesses attempted to recruit. Employers attracted an average of 17 applicants per vacancy and interviewed three applicants.
