For students looking for a job, the last thing they want to worry about is whether a prospective employer is finding it too hard to verify their skills. The reality is, in a competitive job market and with employers keen to get on with recruiting, any extra steps to check a candidate has the right skills might mean they get passed over.
So it is great news for vocational education and training (VET) students that they can now give themselves a competitive edge, by giving permission to third parties like licensing bodies, employment agencies or potential employers to view their authenticated Unique Student Identifier (USI) Transcript. It’s also a great time saver for employers.
A USI is a reference number that gives students access to an online record of any nationally recognised training in the form of a USI Transcript. The USI Transcript can be used when applying for a job, seeking credit transfer or demonstrating pre-requisites when undertaking further training.
Giving students the ability and choice to share their academic record increases transparency in the VET sector and reduces regulatory burden during employment recruitment processes, and applications for funding, by making it easier to verify VET qualifications.
These changes are thanks to the passing of The Student Identifiers Amendment (Enhanced Student Permissions) Bill 2019, on 25 May 2020. The passing of this bill allows students who have completed a VET course after 1 January 2015 to control whether or not they give permission for third parties to view their official USI Transcript.
Not only that, it allows them to choose who they give permission to, and which of their achievements are displayed. Students can also set the period the transcript can be viewed, with the ability to remove this permission at any time.
Of course, because a USI Transcript contains personal information as defined by the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) there are protections in place. Under the law, USI transcripts must not be copied or disclosed to any other person without the consent of the individual student.
