Transition to Work a success for young Aussies and employers

For three Transition to Work participants, Daniel, Ethan and Caramon, guidance from their Transition to Work providers helped set them on a course to new careers.

Transition to Work helped build their skills, confidence and job readiness to prepare for the workforce, and then quickly gain employment.

Daniel, from Canberra, secured a traineeship as a child care worker with Cubs Corner child care. His Transition to Work provider, Harsha from OCTEC, worked closely with Daniel and made sure any  requirements for employment were taken care of. For example, ensuring he had a working with vulnerable people check.

“We assist all our participants with tickets, licences, courses. We also support employers with wage subsidy and the post-placement support for six months,” Harsha said.

Ethan, from the Gold Coast, wanted a hands-on working environment. He worked with his provider to secure two weeks work experience with a local builder which led to a carpentry apprenticeship.

“I did my work experience for two weeks and about a week after that I got a call up from Brent and he said I got the apprenticeship,” Ethan said.

Caramon, from Darwin, spent time in Transition to Work building his confidence so he was ready to take on a job as Maintenance Officer at Darwin’s Adina Vibe hotel.

Transition to Work providers deliver intensive pre-employment support to ensure young people meet the needs of employers and are supported to settle into a job.

Adina Vibe’s Indigenous Liaison Officer Barbara Baugh explains that Transition to Work made recruiting easier.

“I would definitely recommend other businesses to engage with the Transition to Work program,” says Barbara.

“Simply just for the support and mentoring that you receive. And the fact that they know who to choose. They choose the right person for the right position for the right business.”

  • Transition to Work supports young people aged 15-24 into employment by providing intensive, pre-employment support to improve the work-readiness of young job seekers and help them into work (including apprenticeships and traineeships) or education.
  • As at 31 May 2020, Transition to Work has recorded over 47,000 job placements and 36,000 accredited vocational education and training activities.
