The VET Student Loans program assists eligible students pay tuition fees for approved higher-level (diploma and above) vocational education and training (VET) courses, when studying at VET Student Loans approved course providers.

Approved Course List and Loan Caps

Courses approved for VET Student Loans are listed on the MySkills website. The maximum loan cap for the course is also available (look for the ‘?’ or for the ‘Financial Assistance’ information).

Note, clicking on the link above shows a filtered search – filtered for ‘Financial assistance – VET Student Loans’. You can apply other filters, such as course features (for example to exclude superseded courses) or to display courses related to a relevant industry sector (such as agriculture or health and community services) depending on your interests by clicking on the ‘Refine Search’ button.

The VET Student Loans (Courses and Loan Caps) Determination 2016 lists the current VET Student Loans approved courses by maximum loan cap. The maximum loan caps are indexed annually.

Approved providers

Providers approved for VET Student Loans are identified by the active ‘VSL’ logo on the MySkills website.

The VET Student Loans Approved Course Providers lists providers currently approved to offer VET Student Loans.

Providers who were once approved to offer VET Student Loans but are no longer approved can be found in the Providers no longer approved to offer VET Student Loans list.

The Regulation Impact Statement sets out the Government's preferred option for the VET FEE-HELP redesign, as well as alternatives, developed following consultations with VET FEE-HELP providers in April 2016 and public submissions in response to the discussion paper.

The Redesigning VET FEE-HELP Discussion Paper outlined issues with the VET FEE-HELP scheme, and proposed a range of possible options to address these. The Discussion Paper was opened for public comment until 30 June 2016.

Review of the VET Student Loans Eligible Course List and Loan Caps Methodology

In February 2017, Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham, Minister for Education and Training began a comprehensive review of the methodology of the VET Student Loan Course list and course caps. The outcome of the review was published on 11 December 2017.

Redevelopment and Audit of the VET Student Loans Data Collection Discussion Paper

The Redevelopment and Audit of the VET Student Loans Data Collection Discussion Paper (the paper) opens consultation with VSL stakeholders to seek views on how the department and Services Australia can ensure relevant, high quality data is collected through the Collection, using best practice submission processes. This paper is similar in purpose and aim to the Redevelopment and Audit of the Higher Education Data Collection Discussion Paper distributed to higher education providers in January 2018.

VET Student Loans Program Evaluation

KPMG conducted a full evaluation of the VET Student Loans program in 2019. The evaluation took into account perspectives from multiple stakeholders inside and outside of the government incuding departmental staff, VET providers and students.
